The Bureau of International Exhibitions, or BIE, is an international organization established by a diplomatic convention signed in Paris in 1928. From its founding bloc of 34 countries, the BIE’s membership has increased to more than 150 nations. Thailand became a member in 1993.
The bureau’s function is to regulate the frequency and quality of exhibitions falling within its mandate, among them the well-known ‘World Expo’ series.
BIE-regulated expositions may be defined as international exhibitions to disseminate information relating to the advancement of the sciences. The BIE is therefore not concerned with trade fairs and indeed the degree of commercial activity carried out at the BIE exhibitions is carefully regulated.
A member nation may propose to the BIE that it be selected as the host of an upcoming world exposition. The theme, timeframe, guidelines and regulations governing an exposition are set by the bureau and notified to the selected host country for compliance. Member countries are invited, via diplomatic channels, to participate in a BIE expo to showcase their socio-economic progress and innovations in certain areas of development.
