THE PEOPLE OF CHINA SELECT “PENG PENG” FOR AUSTRALIAN PAVILION MASCOT
The Australian pavilion today announced that, after a two-month long competition, the people of China have selected the name "Peng Peng" for its kookaburra mascot. Commissioner General for the Australian pavilion, Peter Tesch, said, "We feel that this is a very suitable name for our mascot."
"The character Peng evokes a sentiment of glory and ambition in Chinese and is indicative of our desire for a successful Expo. The name Peng Peng also means friendship and as such conveys the deep people to people and business links that exist between Australia and China."
"I understand that the character Peng is a distinctly Chinese name dating back to a mythological bird in Zhuang Zi's, literary piece, Xiao Yao You. As such Peng is particularly apt as the kookaburra is a native Australian bird", Tesch said.
The competition consisted of two parts. First the people of China were asked to suggest names for the Australian pavilion's kookaburra mascot. Those names were shortlisted down to five and Chinese residents were able to vote on which one they liked best on Sina.com.
Mr Tesch added, "With over 2,800 entries, and thousands voting for their favourite name on Sina.com, it is clear that this competition ignited a spark of imagination in the minds of the Chinese public."
The winner will receive a substantial prize package, featuring a week-long Australian holiday for three people, courtesy of Qantas Holidays. The prize also includes a (AUD) $2,000 ANZ Access account, generously provided by ANZ, one of Australia's leading banks, which is a platinum sponsor of the Australian pavilion.
"Clever and confident, with a cheeky and bold character, the kookaburra reflects the Australian personality. We look forward to the people of Shanghai getting to know Peng Peng, and through him learning more about his Australian home, in the lead up to, and during, the biggest world expo in history" said Mr Tesch.
